Washington is a town within the City of Sunderland, and is located an equal distance from the city centres of Newcastle and Durham, as well as Sunderland.
It was until 1964 that Washington officially became a town. Since then it has expanded rapidly and coasted a population of 67,085 in 2011.

The town is known for its industrial activity, which is still thriving today. Currently the Nissan automotive plant is one of the biggest employers in the area. A number of major roads run though or close to the town, including the A1(M), A182, A1231 and A195.
