Commercial property in Redditch

Redditch is a town in North-East Worcestershire, roughly 15 miles south of the city of Birmingham. It’s considered to be one of Birmingham’s most popular commuter towns and has a population of over 84,000.

The town was once known for its needle and fishing tackle industry. Manufacturing of fishhooks began in the late 18th century as needle manufacturers diversified. The needle industry was so expansive in Redditch that at one stage that around 90% of the entire world’s needles were made in the town and its surrounding areas. Now, it’s home to the headquarters of automotive retail giant Halfords and engineering firm GKN, as well as precious metal manufacturing plants which employ a lot of the town’s residents.

In the 1960s and 70s new housing developments were built in the town to accommodate high numbers of workers from Birmingham’s rapidly expanding industries. Innovative new town planning and building methods were deployed during the town’s redevelopment, such as banking dual carriageways to reduce the noise for nearby housing estates.
