Harlow is a town and district in Essex, bordering Hertfordshire and London. It has a population of 82,059.

The settlement in ‘Old Harlow’ has been around since the early medieval period. Many historic buildings still stand in the area, including a number of high-street buildings that hail back to the early Victorian period. Harlow’s ‘New Town’ area was constructed in the years following WW2 to help house displaced families from London, who had lost their homes in the Blitz. Its construction was completed by the early 1950s. A large proportion of social housing made up the new homes, to support families unable to afford London rents.

Harlow is on the edge of the Greater London commuter belt, making it a more affordable place to live for those who work in the capital. Harlow is also an employment hub in its own right thanks to its position on the M11 corridor and close proximity to London Stansted Airport. Manufacturing plants like Raytheon employ many of the town’s residents and multi-national pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline also has a large presence in the town.

Harlow has lots of green spaces, with more than a third of the district made up of parkland or fields with public footpaths. It’s also home to more than 100 public sculptures of notable figures including Barbara Hepworth and Auguste Rodin.
