Turning off the A1 at Junction 57, on the way to Middlesborough, you reach the pretty north east town of Darlington. The town is accessible by road and rail – the train station is served by several lines including CrossCountry services as far as Edinburgh and Plymouth, the Transpennine Express to Newcastle and Manchester, and the LNER to London King’s Cross. Darlington is also remarkably well connected to Durham Tees Valley Airport just down the A67 – and there’s a direct train – with regular flights to Aberdeen and Amsterdam.
