The centre, which opened in 2006, was the city's first covered shopping centre. Since British Land acquired Drake Circus in 2011, it has successfully attracted a range of new brands including Apple, Boux Avenue, Smiggle, Joules, Ernest Jones, Cath Kidston, White Stuff and Ann Summers.

British Land is on site with a 100,000 sq ft leisure development adjacent to the shopping centre, which will include a 12-screen Cineworld cinema, 15 restaurant units and 420 parking spaces. It is due to complete at the end of 2019. In 2016, British Land acquired the New George Street Estate linking the retail centre with the leisure scheme, providing greater control over the wider environment

Drake Circus has a catchment of over half a million people and Plymouth sees around 3.4 million tourists each year. The scheme has annual footfall of around 18 million people and is located close to the train station, which is connected by a regular bus service.
